We hope that all of our wonderful orchestra families have settled in well enough to the 2013 - 2014 another school year.  The OHS Orchestras Parent Volunteer Team will be sending you periodic reminders and news about items of note (no pun intended) with the OHS orchestra program.  All of these e-mail announcements will also be posted on the homepage of the OHS Orchestras website at  so that you will have multiple resources to keep you informed.  Here goes the school year kick-off news:
WELCOME MR. O!  We are thrilled to welcome Max Oppenheimer as our fabulous new orchestra director.  Mr. Oppenheimer is a graduate of the School of Music at James Madison University. While there, he served as principal violist of the JMU Symphony Orchestra and Camerata Strings while completing a degree in Music Education.  Some of you may remember Mr. Oppenheimer from his days as a student teacher at OHS under Deb Myers or at Rocky Run MS under Stephen Matthie.  Having learned from the best, Mr. Oppenheimer then went on to head the orchestra programs at Mt. Vernon HS and Whitman MS from 2011-2013. Mr. Oppenheimer currently plays the viola with the Annandale Symphony and enjoys frisbee golf, camping, hiking and other outdoor activities. He is thrilled to be back at OHS and is looking forward to getting to know all us awesome orchestra families and to leading our kids through a great year of music making!  Please feel free to contact Mr. Oppenheimer at with any questions.
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT for 11th and 12th graders is coming up next Wednesday, September 18th, 7:00 p.m.  Please plan to attend and meet Mr. Oppenheimer if you haven't already had the pleasure.  He will share a brief overview of classroom plans and expectations.
REMIND 101 enrollment is available to all students and parents who would like to receive text message reminders from Mr. Oppenheimer about class assignments, concerts, auditions and other important things.  Instructions for enrolling are in the Orchestra Handbook (a copy of which is on our website) and will also be available at Back-to-School Night and Orchestra Night. If you would prefer an email reminder rather than a text reminder, please send an email to (for all students), or (for Concert students), or (for Symphonic students), or  (for Chamber students).
CAR WASH FUN is coming up Saturday, September 21st.  This is always a terrific opportunity to spend a few hours with old orchestra friends, meet new ones, raise money for the orchestra - oh, and to come away with a clean car!  Student and parent volunteers will be needed to provide supplies and staff  the event.  Stay tuned for more details!
ORCHESTRA NIGHT is Wednesday, September 25th in the OHS Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.  All families, not just freshman families, are expected to attend in order to hear spring trip plans (details will be kept top secret until then!), fundraising plans, and a more detailed overview of programming for the new school year.  Note that there will be a fresh new look in concert attire this school year for ALL students, new and old.  Uniform measuring will take place for both upperclassmen and freshmen on Orchestra Night.
PHOTOGRAPHS NEEDED in order to update our website.  Sadly, most of the current website photos are several years old now and we'd love to update them with fresh ones.  Please send digital photos from the last year or two to Webmaster Bill Lankenau at Bill Lankenau if you have some to share.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES will abound for orchestra parents!  The new OHS Orchestras Volunteer Team (formerly the OHS Orchestras Booster Club) is a parent-led volunteer organization commitment to supporting the OHS orchestra director, our program, and our kids.  Fundraising to support spring trip costs and overall programming needs is a vital part of our mission, but not the only one!  We still need a photographer, stage crew, uniform assistant, spring trip assistant and GL Scrip coordinator, to name a few.  More information about these roles will be available at Orchestra Night. and open positions will be noted under the "Volunteers" tab on our website. Please also feel free to contact this year's OVT Co-Chairs below with questions.
That's enough for now!  We look forward to working with you throughout the school year to make this a fantastic year of music-making and fun.  Feel free to contact Mr. Oppenheimer, Patty Lankenau or Anne Suh at any time with questions, or even better, suggestions for supporting the excellence of our orchestra program. Please also let us know if you would prefer to unsubscribe to these messages.
