WELCOME BACK to Another Year of Fun and Music-Making with the OHS Orchestras!

We hope that all of our wonderful orchestra families, both new and returning, have settled in well enough to the new 2014 - 2015 school year.  The OHS Orchestra Boosters will be sending you periodic reminders and news about items of note (no pun intended) with the OHS orchestra program.  All of these e-mail announcements will also be posted on the homepage of the OHS Orchestras website at http://ohsorchestras.org/  so that you will have multiple resources to keep you informed.  Here goes the school year kick-off news:

BACK TO ORCHESTRA NIGHT is next Monday, September 15th in the OHS Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.  All new orchestra families are expected to attend, and all returning families are strongly encouraged to participate. Mr. Oppenheimer will unveil exciting details about this year's spring trip and other exciting programming activities.  Also, uniform measuring for new students will take place on Orchestra night.  Bring your checkbook to place your uniform order!

PLEASE RETURN FORMS! to class ASAP.  These include the Student Information Form handed out in class and at Cougar Kick-off, as well as the Participation Fee Form and the Student-Parent-Teacher Contract attached at the back of the Handbook and Syllabus (which was distributed in all classes in the past few days and available under the "Forms and Documents" tab).  Parents as well as students are expected to review the Handbook for a good understanding of class expectations.  The 2014-2015 Orchestra Calendar is also attached at the front of the Handbook.  Please make sure all concert and other dates are transferred onto your family calendars.  Concert participation is MANDATORY for all students!

SENIOR REGIONAL AUDITIONS are coming up on Monday, September 29th at McLean High School.  Students interested in auditioning need to turn in $8.00 to Mr. Oppenheimer ASAP this week.  Audition excerpts and requirements are posted under the "Upcoming Competitions" tab.   Senior District Orchestra auditions are coming up in November - details also available on the website.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHTS for 9th and 10th graders is Wednesday, September 17th.  BTS Night for 11th and 12th graders is Tuesday, September 23rd.  Mr. Oppenheimer will share a brief overview of classroom plans and expectations.

REMIND 101 enrollment is available to all students and parents who would like to receive text message reminders from Mr. Oppenheimer about class assignments, concerts, auditions and other important things.  Instructions for enrolling are in the Orchestra Handbook (a copy of which is on our website) and will also be available at Back-to-School Night and Orchestra Night. If you would prefer an email reminder rather than a text reminder, please send an email to

Oakton@remind.mail.com (For All students)

mroppen@remind.mail.com (for Concert students), or

mroppenh@remind.mail.com (for Symphonic students), or

mroppenhe@remind.mail.com  (for Chamber students).

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES will abound for orchestra parents!  The OHS Orchestra Boosters is a parent-led volunteer organization commitment to supporting the OHS orchestra director, our program, and our kids.  Fundraising to support spring trip costs and overall programming needs is a vital part of our mission, but not the only one!  More information about critical volunteer vacancies will be available at Orchestra Night and open positions will be noted under the "Volunteers" tab on our website. Please also feel free to contact this year's parent chair Patty Lankenau with any questions.

I look forward to working with our most awesome orchestra families throughout the school year to make this a fantastic year of music-making and fun.  Feel free to contact Mr. Oppenheimer or Patty Lankenau at any time with questions, or even better, suggestions for supporting the excellence of our orchestra program.

Patty Lankenau
