OHS Orchestra Updates and Reminders (Week of October 7th)

posted Oct 8, 2013, 6:30 PM by Oakton Orchestras

Have you turned in your NY trip commitment deposit yet???  We are so, so excited about the prospect of a spring trip to New York City in March (3/27 -29, 2014), but we will not be able to go unless initial trip deposits are turned in this week!!!  Please, please don't make us have to cancel the trip!  We're looking forward to 3 fun-filled, adventuresome, and MUSICAL days of sight-seeing, the NY Phil, Central Park, China Town, Boat Tour, and MORE (including hotel omelet bar). See the Spring Trip 2014 webpage for pictures. BUT we have to place a nonrefundable deposit with our travel agent in the next few days in order to proceed with the trip. We know it sounds early, but we need to proceed with trip planning NOW. We will not be able to go (and there will be many sad and disappointed kids) unless we have a minimum number of participants and deposits THIS WEEK.  PLEASE TURN IN YOUR INITIAL TRIP DEPOSIT OF $200, BY CHECK PAYABLE TO OAKTON HIGH SCHOOL, NO LATER THAN THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11 TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT.   Please see the Spring Trip 2014 tab of our website for more information.

Questions you might be having about the trip:

1.  I'm afraid my child will miss class and school work.  No worries. This is an official FCPS school-sponsored field trip.  Make-up of work will be supported by teachers and the OHS administration alike. They WANT you to go.  We have also learned that the McLean Youth Orchestra concert formerly scheduled for March 29 has been rescheduled in order to allow orchestra field trip participation.  Please contact Mr. Oppenheimer with any concerns.

2.  I'm concerned about the cost of the trip.  Again, no worries!  Financial assistance is available.  Please contract Mr. Oppenheimer for a confidential discussion of your concerns.  Fundraising opportunities are coming up as well.  If the initial trip deposit of $200 is not feasible for you now, send in what you can this week and we will work with you to pay the balance later.  WE DON'T WANT TO LEAVE ANYONE BEHIND BECAUSE OF FINANCIAL WORRIES AND WILL DO WHATEVER WE CAN TO MAKE THE TRIP WORK FOR YOU. But we need an accurate headcount immediately.  Many students have been able to attend the trip in the past due to financial aid opportunities.

3.  I'm worried about supervision while my child is on the trip.  Once again, no worries.  We will have many parent, teacher and even OHS administrator chaperones with us on the trip.  We've never lost a kid yet, and in fact, have 100% "likes" from all former trip participants.

4.  I'm just not sure the trip is worth it.  YES, IT IS!!!!  Just ask any of our seniors who attended the NY trip three years ago.  It was AWESOME!!!  Past graduating seniors usually cite the orchestra spring trip as one of, if not THE most fun and memorable experience of their high school years. And we have put together a trip package that is extraordinarily economical for all we will be enjoying.  Please don't let your child miss it!

Mr. Oppenheimer will reward all those who make trip deposits this week with CANDY!

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SUCCESSFUL SENIOR REGIONAL ORCHESTRA AUDITIONEES!  Please extend kudos to the following OHS orchestra students who successfully qualified last week as participants or alternates in the 2013 Senior Regional Orchestra event.  Participants will be eligible to audition for "All State" Orchestra in February :

Violin:  Tiffany Cai, Angela He and Chris Suh
Viola:  Ian Johnson
Cello:  Jack Lankenau

Alternates: The amazingly talented Chung sisters - Hannah (violin) and Sarah (viola)

ALL of the OHS orchestra kids who auditioned deserve our praise for their hard work and courage in competing in this highly selective audition.  You represented your school with excellence and we are so very proud of you!!!

TURN IN YOUR CONCERT UNIFORM ORDER NOW!  Parent volunteers were in classes last week measuring for uniforms. Students from whom payment is due should have brought home an order form - please ask them for it!  Please return the order form with appropriate payment ASAP.  Checks are payable to "Oakton High School". In the event that your child was not measured in class, the order form and instructions for measuring at home are posted on our website under the Forms and Documents tab.  It is REALLY important that your order form and payment are returned ASAP so that uniforms will be available for our December concert!

Those of the highlights for now!  Feel free to contact Mr. Oppenheimer, Patty Lankenau or Anne Suh at any time with questions, or even better, suggestions for supporting the excellence of our orchestra program. Please also let us know if you are no longer with the orchestra program and would like to unsubscribe to these messages.
