OHS Orchestras Weekly News and Updates (Week of October 15, 2014)

posted Oct 16, 2014, 7:09 PM by Oakton Orchestras
Fall is racing by quickly and several important deadlines are approaching.  Please read the important bulletins below and mark your calendars accordingly:

DISTRICT ORCHESTRA AUDITIONS coming up  November 18th at Rachel Carson Middle School.  If you are interested in auditioning for this honors orchestra opportunity, YOU MUST SEND IN THE $5.00 FEE ASAP!  Sign up sheets are on the board inside the Orchestra Room.  Audition excerpts and requirements are available under the "Upcoming Competitions".

ORCHESTRA SPIRIT WEAR PRODUCTS will be available for order soon due to popular demand!  Spirit wear will be student-designed and inspired.  Please submit your design to Erica Pi or to Mr. Oppenheimer by this coming Friday, October 17th!  Order information to come.

TRI-M MUSIC HONOR SOCIETY APPLICATIONS are DUE this coming Friday, October 17th for all interested upperclassmen.  Juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for membership in Oakton's new chapter!  See Mr. Oppenheimer with any questions.

SPRING TRIP PLANNING IS UNDERWAY!  Mr. Oppenheimer has been busy finalizing the details of our totally fun (and educational) spring trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. A trip commitment letter/contract will be sent home soon.  Here are some key details:

Dates:  April 16 - 20, 2015

Trip Cost:  $817 per student (estimate, based on final number of participants).  The cost will cover transportation via Amtrak rail service, on-property lodging, participation in the “You’re Instrumental!” workshop, three-day Park-Hopper admission pass, three meal vouchers, one group breakfast and local transportation.

Payment Installment Due Dates:  $300 due October 24, 2014; $300 due February 1, 2015; $Final/balance due March 9, 2015.

All checks should be payable to "Oakton High School".  Note that the actual, final cost of the trip will depend on the total number of trip participants.  The more students participating, the lower the cost of the trip for all!  Don't miss this opportunity to make sunny memories (and great music) with your orchestra friends.  Most OHS alums have cited the spring orchestra trips as their fondest memories of high school - you don't want to miss the magic!  Fundraising and limited scholarship opportunities will be available. Speaking of which . . .

ANNUAL CHEESECAKE FUNDRAISER KICKS OFF!  Information packets/order forms will be distributed in class next week, October 20 and 21st.  YUMMY SWEETZ CHEESECAKES are always a hit for Thanksgiving dessert and will arrive Monday, November 24 just in time for the holiday!  This is our biggest fundraiser of the year - all profits will be applied to reduce the overall cost of the Disney trip to all students (note that profits will not be allocated to individual student accounts as in years past due to new FCPS fundraising regulations).  Sell to family, friends, neighbors, teachers and anyone else willing to sacrifice a few calories for a good cause!

FALL CONCERT IS COMING!  On Wednesday evening, October 29th at 7 p.m. in the OHS Auditorium.  Please mark your calendars for this spooktacularly marvelous evening of music to kick off our school concert season.  Attendance for all students is mandatory - and you won't want to miss it anyway as our concerts always promise to be amazingly great!  Concert attire for students will be your new orchestra polo shirt, khaki pants (with shirt tucked in), black shoes, and optional Halloween accessory.

ADVERTISE IN OUR CONCERT PROGRAMS!  Do you have a business that you'd like to advertise to a community of friends and music lovers?  Oakton High School is home to a thriving orchestra program whose musicians and parents are prime prospects for your business. Orchestra students are high-achievers academically and otherwise, making this an ideal audience for academic enrichment activities.  We are also residents and participants in the larger Fairfax County community who love to support our local businesses. If this sounds appealing (and potentially profitable), please consider advertising in our concert programs!  We publish five concert programs during the school year, one for each school concert, which are dutifully attended by a dedicated cadre of parents, friends and family. Rates are affordable too!  The Advertising flyer and order form is available under the "Forms and Documents" tab of our website at OHS Orchestra Website .  Please contact our Advertising Coordinator, Jennifer Skangos, at (703) 501-0242 with questions.  Messages and artwork can be emailed by reply to this address.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP BOARD!  If you are interested in assuming a student leadership role within the orchestra program (or if you have a friend in mind), please see Mr. Oppenheimer to nominate yourself or a friend as soon as possible!  Elections will be held soon.

Questions?  Please contact Patty Lankenau or Mr. Oppenheimer.

Have a great rest of the week!
