FREE WEEKEND CONCERTS FEATURING OUR FINEST!  Don't miss these two fantastic FREE concert opportunities this weekend (both of which will also be great excuses for avoiding yard raking chores!) -
  • Our Senior Regional Orchestra participants will be performing a concert TODAY (Saturday, November 15) at Herndon High School at 2 p.m.  This promises to be a fantastic program in which several of our most awesome students will be performing.  Please come out and cheer them on!
  • Mr. Oppenheimer will be performing with the Fairfax Chamber Players at a concert tomorrow (Sunday, November 16) at 3:30 PM at West Springfield High School. The concert will feature a lot of string orchestra “favorites” and include a raffle of tickets to other local orchestra concerts, such as the NSO!  See the attached flyer for more details

Mr. Oppenheimer will give EXTRA CREDIT to students who attend either or both concerts - plus free autographs and photo opportunities :)

SENIOR DISTRICT ORCHESTRA AUDITIONS are next week, Tuesday, November 18 at Carson MS. Registration info and audition times are posted in the Orchestra Room on the bulletin board.

ORLANDO TRIP  We're continuing to plan the details of our fabulous trip to Orlando in April.  We are aware that this year's trip is more expensive than in past years due to our travel and hotel arrangements, which we believe will greatly enhance the value and enjoyment of the trip for all participants.  In order to make the trip accessible to all of our students, we would like to be able to provide scholarship funds to as many students as possible.  IF YOUR FAMILY IS ABLE AND WILLING TO DONATE SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS TO SUPPORT THE SPRING TRIP, please contact Mr. Oppenheimer.  Any amount that you might be able to donate would be greatly appreciated and be invaluable to our kids.  Please also see contact Mr. Oppenheimer for more information about the availability of scholarship support for your child.

ISO TRUCKER DAD (OR MOM)   Calling one more parent secretly harboring a lifelong trucker dream! We still need one parent to share in driving a van of larger instruments to Orlando and back on our spring trip and to chaperone while there.  One lucky dad has already volunteered, and only one spot remains!  If you sign up for this most cool chaperone opportunity (which could no doubt be the feature of a hot new Discovery Channel show), the cost of your trip participation (hotel, park tickets, etc.) will be FREE!  Please contact Patty Lankenau if you are interested or need more information.

CHEESECAKE DELIVERIES MONDAY AFTERNOON, NOVEMBER 24. Cheesecake orders will be ready for pick up on Monday, November 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Orchestra Room. These are refrigerated products that need to be picked up and delivered to your customers promptly!  We will not be able to store them for you.  We need a few PARENT VOLUNTEERS to help sort the cakes from noon till 2, and then to help with distribution from 2 to 4. Please contact parent coordinator Chi Wai if you're able to lend a hand.

DECEMBER CONCERT DATES!  Mark your calendars now for these upcoming, festive concerts (mandatory attendance for all applicable performers!):

  • Saturday, December 13th at 7:30 p.m. for Chamber Orchestra ONLY.  This is a super special collaborative performance by Oakton's top orchestra and chorus groups of the Saint-Saens Christmas Oratorio.  Information letters were sent home Monday - see attached and on Orchestra Website under Forms/Documents tab). Rehearsal Schedule to follow shortly.  Note that this is a NEW CONCERT DATE for Chamber kids - not previously noted on the orchestra calendar.
  • Thursday, December 18th at 7 p.m. All OHS Orchestras Winter Concert, with the Luther Jackson Middle School Chamber Orchestra as our special guests.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!  All students should be bringing their instruments home and practicing on a nearly daily basis. Consistent progress is dependent on it!  Several parents have told Mr. Oppenheimer that they aren’t seeing or hearing their child practice consistently. ALL STUDENTS are encouraged (and expected) to practice EVERY DAY even if they have too many other commitments and it’s just for a short amount of time (5-10min). You can do this during Cougar Time at school or at home.  This is WAY better than no practice at all. Plus it’s fun and makes orchestra rehearsals more enjoyable for everyone (translation:  Mr. Oppenheimer will fuss at you less!)

2015 ORCHESTRA ASSESSMENT WILL BE ON MARCH 6 and 7 for ALL STUDENTS and will be held at Falls Church HS. Families need to keep this weekend CLEAR and UNCOMMITTED. This is like our SOL “test” and a very important concert. We are “hosting” this event despite it not being at OHS. So our wonderful students and parent volunteers will be providing the support needed to run the event. More details coming - Mr. Oppenheimer is looking forward to working with everyone!
