Oakton Orchestras Weekly News and Updates (February 23, 2015)

WE HOPE THAT ALL OF OUR ORCHESTRA FAMILIES ARE STAYING WARM THIS WINTER.  IT'S TIME TO COME OUT OF HIBERNATION FOR THESE IMPORTANT UPCOMING EVENTS:

PRE-ASSESSMENT CONCERT RESCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY!  March 3rd, OHS Auditorium, 7:00 p.m.  Call time for musicians is 6:00 p.m.  Please come support our students as they prepare for next week's District XII Assessment performance!  Note that we need parent volunteers to donate goodies and helping hands for our post-concert reception.  Please sign up for an open slot at this Sign Up Genius link:  Concert Reception Donations and Help  

DISTRICT XII ASSESSMENT SCHEDULE:  Mark your family calendars NOW for these very important dates next weekend, the equivalent of Orchestra SOLs, and MANDATORY for all students:


Concert: FRIDAY MARCH 6th - Arrive 3:30pm – Storage room 3:50 – Warm up 4:20 – Performance 4:50 – Sight read 5:10 

Symphonic: SATURDAY MARCH 7TH - Arrive 9:00am – Storage room 9:30 – Warm up 10:00 – Performance 10:30 – Sight read 11:00 

Chamber: SATURDAY MARCH 7TH - Arrive 2:15pm – Storage room 2:30 – Warm up 3:00 – Performance 3:30 – Sight read 4:10 


All performances are at FALLS CHURCH HIGH SCHOOL – 7421 Jaguar Tr. Falls Church 22042

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ASSESSMENT WEEKEND!  Oakton is hosting this year's Assessment event at Falls Church HS.  We will need parent and student volunteers the entire weekend to help with:

Registration – checking in groups as they arrive, taking judge scores and directing them to their rooms

“Runners” - basically walking groups to and from storage, warm up, performance and sight reading locations (students mostly)

Hospitality – making coffee, setting up snacks and meals for judges, concession stand organizing and staffing, etc…

Data transfer – taking judge recordings off an SD card and putting them onto flash drives for directors

Announcing – will need to dress up and announce each group as they take the stage and perform. (Mr. O's dad did this for an assessment when he was in HS and loved it)

“Gofers” – Extra hands to help where needed.

ALL FAMILIES ARE ASKED AND NEEDED TO PARTICIPATE IN ORDER FOR THIS EVENT TO RUN SMOOTHLY. All students will get community service hours, Tri-M points and Orchestra letter points for their time.  Parents will have Mr. O's eternal and undying gratitude  Not to mention the reward of knowing that you have helped an event that keeps music in the lives of literally over 1000 students in 30 different orchestras.
