Dear Orchestra Parents and Students,
 
With the first concert just around the corner and several fundraising and orchestra events to launch, we are off to a busy season in orchestra at Oakton!  Please make a note of the following events on your calendars:
 
SENIOR DISTRICT ORCHESTRA REGISTRATION DUE OCT. 15
Every year OHS sends several musicians to participate at the senior district orchestra event.  Eligibility is determined by auditions that take place at Kilmer Middle School on November 12th and the actual event takes place on January 4 and 5 at Langley HS.  Registration forms are available on Blackboard and are due to Ms. Mezvinsky by Monday, October 15th.
 
GLScrip GIFT CARD OCTOBER ORDERS DUE OCT. 15
If you purchase gift cards for birthdays, anniversaries or other celebrations, this is an ideal way to earn points toward payment for your student’s orchestra trip in the spring.  Order via www.shopwithscrip.com and find the instructions for registering here.  Please make out your checks to OHS Orchestra Booster Club and send in to Ms. Mezvinsky by Monday, October 15th.
 
CARWASH ON OCTOBER 20
We still need a parent volunteer for the first shift from 10:45 am – 1 pm.  If you are available during that time frame, please reach out to Deb MacLean via e-mail (macleandeb@gmail.com) and let her know you can help.  Please come out to support the orchestra by getting your car washed at Shell Gas Station (252 Maple Ave., Vienna) and let your friends and neighbors know about this event.  The event flyer is attached.
 
CHEESECAKE SALES START OCT. 18/19
Forms for our cheesecake fundraiser will be distributed to students this Thursday and Friday.  This is one of our biggest fundraisers so we are counting on your participation in this delicious effort!  The sales period will run from Oct. 18/19 to Nov. 1/2nd.  Cheesecake orders will be available for pick-up on Nov. 19th, the Monday before Thanksgiving.
 
SPRING TRIP DETAILS
Current cost estimate for the trip to Philadelphia is between $500-$550 per student.  Parent chaperones travel free of charge.  Ms. Mezvinsky is finalizing the itinerary and will be getting the trip packet out to you in the next week.  Please keep in mind that with many of the fundraisers, you can earn points toward payment for the trip.  If financial difficulties are a factor in making a decision about the trip, please contact me (anne.suh@gmail.com or 571-241-8102) or Ms. Mezvinsky (mlmezvinsky@fcps.edu or 703-319-2748) for a confidential discussion of how the boosters might help.  We do have some funds set aside for scholarships and the booster organization is dedicated to helping families who need assistance in making trip participation possible for every orchestra student.
 
I hope you are all enjoying the gorgeous fall weather we’ve been having.  Keep your fingers crossed for some more sun for our car wash on Saturday. 
 
I was at the Oakton-Chantilly volleyball game this past week and was impressed to see the cougar spirit on display along with some awesome volleyball.  I look forward to the same spirited display in music at the concert later this month!
